Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program
PVD CAP’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, commonly known as VITA, provides free tax preparation and electronic filing for eligible residents earning less than $60,000 per year.
Trained VITA volunteers help residents prepare and file their federal and state tax returns at no cost, allowing participants to receive the refund they are entitled to without paying tax-preparation fees.
The 2026 VITA Season Has Ended
PVD CAP’s 2026 VITA tax preparation season ran from February 3 through April 11, 2026.

Free Tax Preparation You Can Trust
Tax season can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to navigate it alone. PVD CAP’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, commonly known as VITA, connects eligible Providence residents with trained volunteers who prepare and electronically file federal and state tax returns at no cost.
By offering free, reliable tax preparation, VITA helps residents avoid costly filing fees, understand the documents they need, and keep more of the refund they are entitled to receive.
Who May Qualify?
PVD CAP’s VITA Program is available to eligible residents who:
• Earn less than $60,000 per year
• Need assistance preparing a basic federal or state tax return
• Can provide the required identification, income, and household documents
• Schedule an appointment in advance
• Appointments are required.
Typical VITA Schedule
During the tax season, PVD CAP generally offers appointments on the following days:
- Tuesdays: 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM
- Wednesdays: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
- Thursdays: 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM
- Saturdays: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Dates and hours may change each tax season. Appointments are required.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
To help volunteers prepare your return, please bring:
- A valid photo ID
- Social Security cards or official Social Security number verification letters for you, your spouse, and all dependents
- ITIN assignment letters, if applicable
- Birth dates for everyone listed on the tax return
- All wage and income statements, including Forms W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, and 1099-MISC
- Interest and dividend statements from banks
- A copy of last year’s federal and state tax returns, if available
- Bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit, such as a blank check
- Daycare payment totals and the provider’s tax identification number, if applicable
For married couples filing jointly, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.
